For 2 ½ years, we have watched the Trump administration gut protections that, for generations, protected the neediest and most vulnerable among us. The Trump administration’s campaign to demonize undocumented immigrants, including asylum seekers, has inflicted a particularly deep wound upon our nation’s soul. For this administration, nothing is sacred, including, as we learned this week, the iconic words at the base of the Statue of Liberty. Kenneth Cucinelli, one of the administration’s top immigration henchmen, offered a perverse and blatantly white-supremacist spin on “the New Colossus” poem by asserting that the phrase “your tired, your poor” referred only to immigrants of European (i.e., white) descent. Certainly, by now, we shouldn’t be surprised.
